Dear Parents:
Thank you for allowing me to teach such wonderful scholars. I am excited to tell you about our the forty book challenge happening in Language Arts this year.
I am challenging each scholar to read forty book; this challenge is very similar to the reading challenge of the previous school year at JMA! Although this seems like a lot of reading, it averages out to be a book a week for the entire school year. Scholars are encouraged to read more books, of course! Books read in class will count towards their forty book challenge. Reading forty books will be accomplished by silent reading time and reading at home. Each scholar will complete a literary analysis pertaining to the books read each month. A record sheet was given to each scholar in class; this information can also be found on the class web page.
The purpose of this challenge is to push scholars beyond their normal reading habits and explore the wonderful world of literature. As scholars explore new titles, they will be challenged to use the reading strategies learned in class in new reading situations.
Some scholars may be fearful off such a high reading goal, but research shows that the best way to become a better reader is to spend time reading a variety of materials for a variety of purposes. You can help your scholar be successful by encouraging them to read. As a Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools scholar, all readers have a free library card from their student ID number. If you would prefer, you can buy novels from a used bookstore or a chain bookstore, but that is not required. Scholars must have a book in class EVERYDAY for independent reading time. We will also be visiting JMA’s Media Center for book selections.
The 8th grade English teachers will be taking the challenge as well! Parents are encouraged to participate with us. You can find copies of all necessary materials on the class wiki page. If you have any questions, concerns or comments, please contact me at [email protected].
Happy reading!

Guidelines/ Rules of the Challenge
- Each book read and recorded must be an appropriate reading level for your scholar.
- Books that are more than 300 pages can be counted as two books.
- Only 2 picture books may be used towards the challenge goal.
- If a book is not of interest to the scholar after giving it a fair shot, do not finish the book. Select another one and keep reading.
- Scholars are not required to read selections in a specific order. Selections can be made as they prefer.
- Audiobooks are an excellent way to be exposed to literature. They are allowed, but not all of the forty books read can be audiobooks.
- We will be celebrating scholar success towards the challenge each quarter.
- One analysis of literature is due each month on the 15th of the month beginning in November.
