Tutoring:
- Three-ring binder or three-prong folder to organize handouts and notes
- Loose-leaf paper
- Several pens or pencils
- Individual copy of Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes (We will read this in April)
Classroom Expectations:
- Come to class prepared to work
- Arrive on time
- Show respect to everyone
- Follow the teacher’s directions immediately
- Always do your best work
- Stay in your seat unless you have permission to get up
- No chewing gum allowed in class
Procedure for entering the classroom:
- Enter the room quietly
- Place homework or other papers in return basket
- Pick up journal
- Pick up pencil, paper, sharpen pencils if needed
- Sit in assigned seat
- Work on warm-up posted on board
Procedure for ending class:
- Scholars will be given a one-minute warning before the bell will ring
- Place your journal in the proper place
- Place work in turn-in basket
- Check for trash around your desk
- Throw away garbage
- Straighten out desks
- Return to seat and wait for dismissal
Procedure for bathroom breaks, lunch, PPA:
- Form a single file line at the front of the classroom
- Walk single file on the right side of the hall
- Stay with the class
- No talking in the hallway
- Line up outside the restroom to wait your turn
Grading policies:
- Informal grades (homework, most classwork, journals, etc.) are 35% of the grade
- Formal grades (tests, major projects, long-term assignments, culminating activities) are 65% of the grade
- Grades are on a 10-point scale:
- A- 100-90
- B- 89-80
- C- 79-70
- D- 69-60
- F- Below 60
- Scholars who score below 80 on a test or quiz will retake the test or quiz after interventions. The scholar cannot earn above 79 on the retake.
Makeup work:
- Scholars who miss class must ask the teacher for makeup work. The scholar will receive a packet with assignments and explanations for how to complete the work. Makeup work is due 5 days after it has been assigned.
- If a scholar misses a test or quiz, the test/quiz will be taken immediately upon the scholar’s return to class. The scholar will receive makeup work to be completed at home for whatever he/she missed in class while testing.
Late work:
- Late work will be accepted only for the current quarter
- Informal assignments will have a 50-point reduction
- Formal assignments will have a 10-point reduction for each day late
- The reduction in points does not include other points taken off during normal grading
Tutoring:
- Tutoring time is available on request. Scholars should make individual arrangements with the teacher. Tutoring time will take place before or after school as needed.
